Publisher and founder Don Olea, along with his wife and General Manager, Peggy Olea, have been in the publishing, newspaper and magazine industry since 1987. They have worked for a number of Gannett newspapers, as well as Amusement Business magazine, The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard magazine to name just a few. With this experience, the Oleas have a gained a wealth of knowledge which goes into each issue of Center Ice Magazine.

Don’s first love has always been ice hockey, and after spending time coaching in Nashville, he realized the need for an ice hockey publication similar to those in the northeast and upper Midwest markets.

In August 2004, Don resigned after nearly five years with Amusement Business/Billboard magazine and created the prototype for Center Ice Magazine.  The magazine was originally created to fill a glaring hole in media coverage for the sport of ice and inline hockey within the Southeastern District.

The magazine was launched just in time for the NHL lockout! Due to these circumstances, some folks said it would never work. They were wrong! Hockey families are starved for good hockey coverage in the south.

What most people don’t know is that the Southeastern District is the fastest growing district within USA Hockey and has been for the last 10 years. It is comprised of 11 states including; Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Currently, we are distributed in ice and inline rinks in all 11 states throughout the District plus selected rinks in Ohio and New York. We have also added the state of Kentucky to our distribution area. Although they are not a part of the Southeastern District, they are very much a source of hockey in the south.

Center Ice Magazine publishes once a month with features, league results, tournament play and analysis of players from youth hockey, high school, college (ACHA & NCAA), minor-pro (SPHL, CHL, AHL & ECHL) and the NHL whose teams fall within the Southeastern District.

Our distribution is extremely targeted. The magazine is being systematically placed in all ice rinks and inline rinks; sports bars and sporting outlets; and specific high-traffic locations frequented by our readers…your customers!  Currently, we are distributed in over 110 ice and inline rinks and we are continually adding more every month!

Center Ice Magazine also seeks to introduce and promote fans and players alike to the sport of ice and inline hockey in non-traditional market stand to help grow all levels of play.
