BEARDEN HIGH SCHOOL ICE HOCKEY TEAM WINS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
Second Knoxville Team Faces Defeat in Early Tournament Play

NASHVILLE —The Bearden High School Ice Dawgs Hockey Team won the StateChampionship Title April 2nd in Nashville when they beat Shelby Central from Memphis.

“We are very proud of our team,” said John Cox, coach of the Bearden Ice Dawgs,” They worked hard for this title and went up against some tough competition but they hung in there and gave it their all.”

The tournament featured top high school hockey teams from across Tennessee, with two teams representing Knoxville — the Knoxville Warriors, which is made up of players from various high schools in the Knoxville area and the Bearden High School Ice Dawgs.

Before making it to the final game, the Ice Dawgs played three tournament games resulting in two victories and one loss. The loss came earlier when they faced Shelby County, but when the two teams faced off again for the championship title, the Bearden Ice Dawgs were able to clinch the 3-0 victory, as Bearden goalie Logan Baker rejected all of Shelby County’s 16 shots. Bearden’s goals in the championship game came from Freshman Chad Miracle and Juniors Ben Jardet and Andrew Nickels.

Nickels had five goals in tournament play, including a hat trick, as he scored three unassisted goals in the Ice Dawgs opening round 3-2 win over Collierville. Jardet was the season’s leading scorer in regular season play.

The Knoxville Warriors suffered two losses early in the tournament—the first was against Shelby County, where they were defeated 5-1, and the second was a 2-1 loss to Bearden.

“The Knoxville Warriors congratulate Coach Cox and the fantastic Bearden players for capturing the championship trophy and bringing it to Knoxville,” said Joe Sardano, coach of the Knoxville Warriors.
