SOUTHAVEN — The Memphis RiverKings of the Central Hockey League have added two goaltenders to their roster as the team prepares for the opening of training camp on October 9. Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin McClelland announced today that the team has signed rookies Eric Marvin and Ben Conway to contracts for 2006-2007. They join Larry Sterling as goaltenders under contract heading into the season.
Marvin (5-11,170 lbs) is a native of Naperville, IL. He concluded a four year career at Division I Western Michigan University (NCAA) in March and then made his pro debut with seven appearances for the Flint Generals of the United Hockey League. In his career with the Broncos, Marvin served primarily in a back-up role. In 15 career games, made seven starts and finished with a 3-5 record, a 4.06 goals against average and an .860 save percentage.
A highlight of his sophomore season of 2003-04 was a 4-0 shutout of Notre Dame in the 2004 CCHA tournament, one of just two postseason shutouts in school history. In his freshman season, he did not see any game action, but was voted by his teammates as the team’s most improved player. Prior to enrolling at WMU, Marvin played three seasons of junior hockey with the Chicago Freeze of the North American Hockey League.
In his seven games with the Generals to close out last season, Marvin played in seven games, going 4-1-2 with a 3.30 goals against average and a .912 save percentage.
Conway (5-11, 175 lbs) is coming off a four year career as the number two goalie at Division I Holy Cross (NCAA). He played in 45 games in his four seasons and ranks second all-time for the Crusaders in save percentage (.909) and third in goals against average (2.56). His career record was 18-15-5. During his senior season last year, the South Hadley, MA native went 5-4-0 with a 2.61 GAA and a .906 save percentage on a team that made it to the Regional Finals of the NCAA tournament.
Conway’s 2.31 goals against average in Atlantic Hockey Association play during his junior season of 2004-05 led all AHA goalies. He was also an AHA goalie of the week twice during his career, notched two shut outs and was a 2004 selection to the Atlantic Hockey All Academic Team.
Prior to Holy Cross, he logged two seasons of junior hockey with the New England Junior Coyotes of the Eastern Junior Hockey League.
The signings of Marvin and Conway put the total of players under contract leading into training camp at 21. The team’s roster will need to be at 18 entering the regular season. The RiverKings open training camp on October 9 with home exhibition games versus Wichita on October 13 and 14. The team opens its 15th anniversary season on October 20 at the DCC versus the Youngstown Steelhounds.
