TOP-SCORING ROOKIES MALKIN, KOPITAR SET TO RESUME RIVALRYIN NHL YOUNG STARS GAME

NEW YORK (Jan. 13, 2007) -- 20-year-old center Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins and 19-year-old center Anze Kopitar of the Los Angeles Kings, separated by just two points at the top of the NHL rookie scoring list, headline the 22 players named to participate in the NHL YoungStars Game presented by Upper Deck, on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at American Airlines Center in Dallas.

The YoungStars Game will be telecast live on VERSUS in the United States and on CBC and RDS in Canada, beginning at 7:30 p.m., ET and followed immediately by the Dodge Nitro/NHL SuperSkills Competition.

Malkin made a spectacular start to his NHL career, becoming the first player in 89 years to tally goals in each of his first six NHL games. Before Malkin, only three players in NHL history had scored at least one goal in each of his first six (or more) games and all did so in 1917-18, the League's inaugural season. Malkin leads the rookie scoring race with 41 points (20 goals, 21 assists) in 38 games.

Two Penguins teammates, center Jordan Staal and defenseman Ryan Whitney, join Malkin on the Eastern Conference squad. Staal, the second overall pick in the 2006 Entry Draft, has tallied a League-leading five shorthanded goals this season. Whitney, selected fifth overall in 2002, has 26 points (seven goals, 19 assists) in 42 games.

Kopitar was the 11th player selected in the 2005 Draft and made an immediate impact in the Kings' 2006-07 lineup, tallying a pair of goals in his League debut and three assists in the following contest. He is the second leading scorer on the Kings and among NHL rookies with 39 points (12 goals, 27 assists) in 45 games.

Among Kopitar's Western Conference teammates is left wing Jussi Jokinen of the All-Star host Dallas Stars. Jokinen achieved fame as a rookie in 2005-06 with his phenomenal shootout success, connecting on his first nine attempts and finishing the season as the League leader in shootout goals (10) and percentage (10 for 13, 76.9%).

YoungStars players were selected by the NHL’s Hockey Operations Department, in consultation with League General Managers.

The 2007 NHL All-Star Celebration, hosted by the American Airlines Center in Dallas, will feature live national broadcasts of the NHL YoungStars Game presented by Upper Deck and Dodge Nitro/NHL SuperSkills event on Tuesday, Jan. 23, and the NHL All-Star Game on Wednesday, Jan. 24 on VERSUS in the United States and CBC and RDS in Canada starting at 8 p.m., ET. NASN, the NHL’s exclusive broadcast partner in Europe, will provide live to more than 25 countries and territories in Europe. NHL RADIO on Westwood One will provide exclusive, national radio coverage in the United States and Canada, while Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio each will provide radio play-by-play coverage.
