FGCU Hockey Club Hires Former U.S. Olympian & NHLer
Division II Hockey on Horizon

The FGCU Hockey Club is pleased to announce that Steve Jensen has been elevated to the Head Coaching position. Steve was the leading goal scorer of the 1976 U.S. Olympic Team and he was a veteran of 432 NHL games with the Los Angeles Kings and the Minnesota North Stars. Steve has an unbelievable amount of passion for coaching and the sport of hockey. Coach Jensen has made nothing but positive contributions to the FGCU Hockey program in the past as he has always strived for hockey excellence. His commitment to the program has been unparalleled and is truly aspiring.

In other news regarding FGCU Hockey, after much deliberation regarding a recent ruling from the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) suspending eight of the Florida Gulf Coast University Hockey Club players from the National Tournament, Division III Commissioner Tom Vanderlaan reinstated all members of the FGCU Hockey Club on March 5, 2006 .

The FGCU Hockey Club is proud to have such strong-willed players as a part of the program and look forward to once again working with these fine-athletes. As the team moves forward, the future looks bright.

Although the players have been reinstated, the FGCU Hockey Program was disciplined further due to financial aid violations. As a result, former Coach Bob Brinkworth and former University Advisor Craig Rademacher have been suspended for two years by the ACHA. The FGCU Hockey Club would like to thank both of these fine gentlemen for all of their efforts towards helping the hockey program become such a success. Their contributions will be remembered and we wish them continued success in all of their future endeavors. In addition to the suspension, the program has also been issued a fine appropriate to the situation.

FGCU Hockey President Matt Maida commented by saying “It has been a difficult couple of months for all of us. We are glad that we are able to put this all behind us and move forward. This is actually good news because the program will be able to continue as normal next season and that is in the best interest of not only the players, but the fans. The team is looking forward to getting back on the ice next season and continuing to provide both the FGCU and Southwest Florida community with quality college hockey.”

As the program looks to the future, FGCU Hockey is proud to announce that it will be moving to Division II of the ACHA. This jump will provide better competition for the Ice Eagles, who have been extremely successful at the Division III level with three consecutive National Tournament appearances. Division II will provide FGCU Hockey with the opportunity to play more recognized universities. This ambitious move will undoubtedly improve the quality of hockey played at Florida Gulf Coast University .
